Son Duong port

The port has a total capacity of 30 million tons of goods/year, receiving ships of 300,000 tons in and out with 36 wharves.
Construction started in February 2012 with construction items including wharves and breakwaters with a total length of more than 8 km.

Project: Son Duong deep-water port (belonging to Son Duong Steel and Port Complex)
Location: Ky Anh district, Ha Tinh province
Investor: Hung Nghiep Formosa Ha Tinh Co., Ltd
Investment capital: 1.5 billion USD
Progress: February 2012 to May 2016.
Main contractor: Samsung C&T
Item constructed by Ngu Thuong: Caisson Infill.

The Son Duong Port project is undertaken by the main contractor Samsung C&T of Samsung Group of Korea, one of the companies with extensive experience in the field of seaport construction.

The 3,091m long wharf includes 96 caissons, the largest weighing up to 13,800 tons. The length of the breakwater is 5,202 m with 152 caissons.

To speed up the construction progress, the main contractor has equipped a professional concrete casting workshop with a sliding formwork system operating in a covered line that can be constructed in the most unfavorable weather conditions to ensure fast and safe construction. To install tens of thousands of tons of concrete blocks safely and accurately to every centimeter, the contractor also had to invest nearly 10 million USD to make a device to launch caissons.

Submersible well and launching equipment 10 million USD

After the caissons have been installed in the correct position, sand will be filled in the wells to maintain the durability and stability of the wharf's foundation.

With a volume of 2.3 million m3 Sand is poured into caissons, the subcontractor constructing this item must mobilize equipment and operate continuously day and night to achieve the project's schedule and technical requirements.

As of the end of September, 34 wells were sunk into their design positions and dozens of precast concrete blocks were waiting to be pulled into installation positions.

Construction work for the northern breakwater is urgently underway before the storm stops from December 2013 to January 2014.

The rough sea season arrives, the port site becomes quiet when even the biggest ships have to escape the storm. The waves easily jumped onto the breakwater under construction. Large waves push water masses up to thousands of cubic meters onto the shore, blowing away sand and rocks, creating deep holes behind the concrete wall.

The wave forecast information is accurate to ¼ day, but the low wave time is too little for construction, creating a quiet construction site surrounded by the sound of waves.
